In the summer of 1997, Aaron Golbert was introduced to lampworking borosilicate glass, and after a few months diligently practicing on the torch he quit his job at a restaurant and began making pendants and marbles for a living. This 5-day intensive class focuses on mixing two-dimensional images and graphic design with flameworked borosilicate solid and hollow forms. We will explore techniques and strategies for creating images, focusing particularly on using Photoshop and Illustrator on the computer. No Photoshop experience is necessary. We will discuss different strategies of using colored glass to achieve successful images on glass. Details will also be covered about different methods of creating photo resist stencils for sandblasting. Recommended 2 years torch experience.

The man in the hooded sweatshirt and cargo pants was not recognizable, but the three letters he was rendering as a 15-foot mural on the wall of a Hell’s Kitchen building certainly were: B.N.E.

B.N.E. Is Everywhere
This mischievous monogram, posted by marker, spray can, roller and especially stickers, has become part of the landscape of New York and cities worldwide, thrilling graffiti admirers and roiling public officials. Its saturation has provoked one of the more enduring Internet mysteries: What and who is B.N.E.?

After a thorough interrogation of the suspect over the weekend ... well, he would not really say. In what he said was his first interview with a journalist, the man in the hooded sweatshirt said he was responsible for this viral dissemination of the three-lettered puzzle, but refused to divulge his name, age or many details about his background and method, for fear of arrest. He also refused to have his face photographed or to say what B.N.E. stands for. His initials, perhaps?

“Let’s just say it has a meaning that’s personal to me,” he said, acknowledging the conjecture online: Breaking and Entering, Bomb Nuclear Explosion. “At this point, it means whatever you need it to mean.”

The postcard-size stickers bearing the three simple black letters are affixed to mailboxes, phone booths, signs, walls, parking meters and streetlights, mostly in New York and Japan, but also in Bangkok, Prague, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur. He goes through 10,000 stickers a month. In 2006, B.N.E. so blanketed San Francisco that the city’s mayor, Gavin Newsom, offered a reward of $2,500 for information leading to his capture.

In relentlessly spreading his tag, B.N.E. follows graffiti writers with nicknames like Taki, Revs and Cost. The idea is to leave one’s mark in as many places as possible, in wry, brash and mischievous ways — a process known as “getting up.”

This weekend, B.N.E. was not spray-painting surreptitiously, but creating a sanctioned mural on a concrete wall in a temporarily vacant building at 595 11th Avenue, near 44th Street. It is part of an exhibition of his work that opens Thursday, sponsored by Mother, a Manhattan advertising agency.

“B.N.E. has single-handedly created a globally recognized and valued brand in the new social economy,” Mother officials said in a news release. “His presence in Flickr photo galleries and YouTube pages dwarfs that of many multinationals.”

But Peter F. Vallone Jr., of Queens, chairman of the City Council’s Public Safety Committee, condemned the show. “This isn’t even someone who’s decided to go legitimate,” he said. “This is an unrepentant criminal who has cost honest taxpayers a lot of money, and he’s profited from it.”

The show itself is a taunt, featuring metal plates and canvases with the B.N.E. tag stamped over images of Mickey Mouse, Bart Simpson, Spider-Man and Bugs Bunny.

“I don’t see other graffiti writers as my competition anymore,” B.N.E. said. “Now I’m going up against the Tommy Hilfigers, Starbucks, Pepsi. You have these billion-dollar companies, and I’ve got to look at their logos every day. Why can’t I put mine up?”

The interview was arranged by Bucky Turco, the editor of Animal, an online magazine, who is helping B.N.E. produce the show. B.N.E. said he would skip the opening party because police officials routinely showed up at such events with video cameras and handcuffs. Anyway, he is heading to South America to blanket another city.

Daytime is for scouting: What are the most trafficked areas? How intense is the enforcement? Do local officials clean their phone booths, or will a tag there last? Nighttime is for tagging, to avoid being seen or photographed.

No, B.N.E. said, he has never been arrested. Yes, he said, he has been chased and shot at by outraged citizens, including the gutsy old man in a Madrid suburb who kicked him in the rear end and yelled at him to get lost.

Yes, he uses only prepaid disposable cellphones. No, he never takes pictures of the work, travels with stickers or paint equipment, or saves anything to his laptop. Yes, his mother thinks he is crazy (she is one of a few family members and old buddies who know he is the man behind B.N.E.)

“You kind of isolate yourself, living this life,” he said. “You meet a girl and she asks, ‘What do you do?’ and right way, you have to lie.”

B.N.E. said he was in his early 30s and funded his tagging through part-time jobs — again, no details. His accent and knowledge of local artists suggests he is from New York. He said he began 15 years ago painting in the old-school graffiti style of flashy lettering, then simplified his style and, 10 years ago, started with stickers.

“I can’t do 500 tags in a day, but I can do 500 stickers,” he said.

Designed with illustrating software and printed on vinyl, the stickers have an iron-grip adhesive. “This is my voice, and if you try to remove it, you’re shutting me up,” he said. The font is the serious-looking Helvetica Neue Condensed. Once, on City Island, he said with a chuckle, workers carefully painted around the stickers as though they had an official purpose.

“I’ve always rebelled against authority,” B.N.E. said. “Like any kid, I wanted to write the whole neighborhood. Most kids like that would then want to go out and do the whole city. In my case, I wanted to do the whole planet.”

Speaking of the planet, Mr. Turco showed a photograph of a huge B.N.E. mural, in a Japanese suburb, that he said was “visible from space.”

Asked how he could prove he was in fact the guy putting the mysterious moniker everywhere, the man in the hooded sweatshirt and cargo pants seemed delighted at yet another layer of mystery. Sure, anyone could use the same graphics and impersonate him for an art show. One could only wait to see if the real B.N.E. would emerge.

“If someone was having a show of my work without me,” he said, “I know I’d show up and cause some problems.”

The theme of the work revolves around money, in both a personal and political fashion. As an artist, money and business is a frustrating yet necessary evil. There is "art" and there are "products for sale", and those cross over to different extents. Andy Warhol had a creative block early in his career and was talking to a gallery owner who told him that he should just "paint what he wanted", which led to his series of dollar bill works. My series of pieces mash's up american pop culture with an anarchist writing the script. A full cylce takes place in 5 stages, the manifestation of greed, the abuse and disrespect, desecration, hedonism, and corporate control of your mind at all costs.

Robert Mickelsen has been flameworking for over 30 years and shows his work in some of the finest galleries in the country. What is “graal”? Graal is a relatively simple and direct way to create controlled patterns and images on the surface of glass vessels. The results are far more detailed than what can be achieved by drawing with stringer or by other more traditional techniques. The addition of graaled elements can create contrast, texture, and a special kind of rhythm in a vessel. Careful use of graal elements in a design can create narrative or aesthetic meaning in a way not possible by other means. Graal imagery can transform an ordinary vessel, sculpture or even a bead or a marble into an extraordinary work of art. This class will be a technique-intense workshop concentrating on graal for flameworked vessels using a process I have developed over the past twelve years. The students will use photomasking technology to transform their original imagery into intricate masks for sandblasting. Computer technology will be utilized for both the creation of and the transformation of artwork into images suitable for graal. Finally, complex construction of multi-sectional vessels using our graaled blanks will be covered.

well ive been quiet but that doesnt mean i havent been working hard. Besides working on a series of stuff for SOFANY in April i have completed a bunch of collabs with the likes of Salt, Jag, Hops, And Eusheen,,,all new stencils, the Salt and Jag stuff went out to Vegas and i got no pics so whenever those guys get around to posting it, just finished my first collab with EUSH, he laced a sick double bub with reversal work in my colors for me to rip up with some images,, came out fresh, but was definitely the most challenging tape job ive done, Eush packs everything so tight,,look forward to doing more with him, maybe if im lucky ill get to borrow a cam to take a flick before i send it back to him,,,

well some of you may have heard that SNIC and I were starting a lil' clothing business called "Fearless Vampire Killers". We are starting simple with hand-screened T-Shirts, last nite we finally got to test out our first screens and make some prototypes, we are in the process of buying lots of samples of diffent types and cuts of high quality T-shirts in an effort to put out a quality and affordable line. At first, all pieces will be hand screened by either me or SNIC. We are going to be wholesaling to stores and are currently working on having a friend set up to do online retail. Should be about a month, give or take, before any are available for purchase. Damien Hirst has become the nation's biggest art export, transforming the global market with multimillion-pound works and earning his place as one of the world's most expensive living artists at auction. But now, just months after the success of a ground-breaking sale at Sotheby's that brought him nearly £100m, Hirst has described the art market as over-priced, and welcomed the prospect of selling his work at cheaper rates in the present climate of recession.

Hirst admitted that art had probably become too expensive in recent years. Referring to his unsold painting of four skulls that was tipped to fetch $3m (£2.02m) at auction in New York last week, he said the work, Beautiful Artemis Thor Neptune Odin Delusional Sapphic Inspirational Hypnosis Painting, which found no takers, "was over-priced" and added: "It was bought from me less than a year ago at half the price. In a way it's good. We are looking at more realistic prices. People who bought things are not going to sell them that day. That is what an artist wants, for people to hang the works on their wall. As an artist, you don't stop making art because people are not buying it".

The 43-year-old artist, who has a personal fortune estimated at £200m, added: "I think it's quite good [adjustment in art market prices] because it became unreal ... You start to think you are touched by God. I have always thought that art is worth what the next guy is prepared to pay.”

The man described by some as the father of Britart, became the most expensive living artist at auction in 2007 for selling his pill sculpture, Lullaby Spring for £9.65m, but yesterday appeared to accept the bumper years were over, at least temporarily. "Buyers are more selective and more speculative. Four years ago, you could buy something for £50,000. If we went back to that, it's not such a problem. What goes up must come down. It's like when John Lennon went to get his long hair cut and someone asked him, 'Why are you cutting it? He said, 'What else can you do after you have grown it long?'"

Hirst, who has a reputation for being commercially astute, said his future work was likely to be priced according to market forces. "If I want to sell new work, I'll price it lower. If people have got less money, you can either just shut your door and say, 'Screw everybody', or I can wait until everyone can afford my work or price it cheaper." Speaking for the first time since the Sotheby's sale in September – which involved going direct to buyers, rather than through a gallery – he said he had been terrified that it would be a disaster. It coincided with the economic crash and the fall of Lehman Brothers.

"I woke up that morning and I saw the papers had called it Black Monday," he said. "I was shitting myself. I thought maybe they wouldn't sell anything. People were looking at me, and I thought I was going to be slaughtered. I didn't know what was going to happen with banks collapsing."

He said he felt fortunate after his pioneering Sotheby's sale. "It was lucky timing," he said. The artist, whose large-scale sculpture of a unicorn in formaldehyde, called The Dream, sold for £4.1m at Sotheby's, has made a darker sculptural version of a unicorn called The Dream is Dead, cast in solid silver and selling at Pangolin London gallery today for a mere £500,000.

He also spoke of his desire to create more works in gold, following The Golden Calf, a bull in formaldehyde with 18-carat gold hooves and horns which he created for the Sotheby's sale.

Well, its official! The FIRST EVER OFFICIAL BOOK about glass pipe art is about to drop this December! Smoked! Vol. 1 is being put out by Grit City Inc, two good friends of mine in Philadelphia: notorious glass artist JAG and graphic design professional Brian Jacobson. I just got back from checking out the test pressings of the book, and i must say i was totally blown away. 30 glass pipe artists each made pieces specifically for this publication, the work has not been published anywhere else, including the internet. Included with each artist's work is a bio, artist statement, and short interview with the artist. My eyes lit up while i perused all 160 pages, there are over 100 professional photographs, and the layout is very classy, it was hard not to sit and read it cover to cover right on the spot. The front of the book includes a background about the project and the people involved, as well as a personal Introduction written by M. Slinger.

This book is about to change the face of glass pipe art collecting and culture. Never before has such a publication documenting a cross section of this subculture existed. Glass pipe-making is very similar to other subcultures like graffiti art, skateboarding, and tattoo art. It is photographs, books, and films of those cultures mentioned that has made them worldwide phenomenoms. The time has come for glass pipe art to come out from the shadows and get the exposure it deserves, and im happy to report that Smoked Vol1 does the scene justice. One day we will look back at this time as the beginning of something bigger, and this book is one of the documents that will be used to inform people about the history of this movement.

All of the pieces will be on display at a special book release exhibition at the Illadelph Gallery in Los Angeles on December 5, 2008. the last couple weeks i have mostly been out of Philly. I was in Vermont for a week for the Pipe Classic, then i went to NYC to see My Bloody Valentine, Dinosaur Jr., and Built to Spill.... The Pipe Classic was awesome, my brother Pakoh won 1st place, i got to see a ton of friends from all over the USA, and i got to kick it tough with my homies Toyo and Nobu from Japan!! My Bloody Valentine was epic, and Built to Spill totally blew my face off,, after playing the album "Perfect From Now On" start to finish they just started into "Keep It Like Secret" for a 4-5 songs... other highlights of my trip include new tattoo(s) (thanx Rachel and Sarah!!), and eating pizza in NYC... sooo here;s a weird video for an awesome song from BTS:

when 3,000 people get MURDERED, it makes sense to try to bring the guilty party to justice, and with all our power and technology we cant find this guy, all we can do is search our own citizens and make everyone comfortable with giving up their privacy and their rights..

we are losing our rights daily, freedom of speech and assembly are going fast, i would be scared to go peacefully protest something these days, for fear of being put in jail due to the grey area created by the Patriot Act, i used to think that peaceful protest was what was great about this country, that we all respected our right to have a voice...

the most patriotic thing you can do is to always ask questions. i was taught that if you didnt understand something fully, that you should ask a question,,

the best way to never forget the victims of 9/11 is to never stop asking questions until we get some conceivable answers...
